Macclesfield Veterinary Hospital

Macclesfield Veterinary Hospital

Wright & Morten is a three centre practice. Our main branch is at our Macclesfield Veterinary Hospital, with branches at Congleton and Wilmslow. We also have an equine clinic at Somerford, near Congleton.

Our Macclesfield base is a fully approved Veterinary Hospital, with full surgical facilities, two kennel blocks, laboratory, isolation and critical care facilities. Our branches have a more modest level of facilities, allowing us to perform all routine and minor operations, such as speys, lump removals, dentistry and minor trauma repair. More complex cases, including orthopaedic operations, cases requiring hospitalisation, and X rays are referred to  the Macclesfield Wright & Morten hospital.

Our branches therefore offer you, as a client, the more personal nature of a smaller practice, coupled with top quality hospital facilities.

We have a total of five dedicated companion-animal vets, providing a breadth of expertise impossible in smaller practices. We all have individual interests: within the practice we have vets interested in orthopaedics (bone surgery), general surgery, behaviour, medical disorders, small furries, acupuncture, homoeopathy.  We also have visiting specialists in dermatology and cardiology.

Our size as a practice allows us to purchase more modern technology, the cost being spread over many more cases than in smaller practices. Our 'toys' include flexible endoscopes, X rays, ultrasonic scanners, ECG, anaesthetic monitoring equipment, and dental work-station. Our laboratory includes an automatic analyser, which can give us blood and blood electrolyte results within 30 minutes of the sample being collected, allowing prompt effective treatment. We also have an automatic X ray developer, giving us high quality plates within 4 minutes.

It is there for us to see a poorly pet at night, have full blood results and X rays within 30 minute, so that surgery can be undertaken without delay.

Contrast this with the situation in the NHS, when you are likely to sit on a hospital trolley for 4 hours before being seen, and where blood and X ray results take weeks not hours!

We offer a full 24 hour emergency service with a veterinary nurse in attendance day and night, along with a duty vet available around the clock. Your hospitalised pet will not be 'shoved in a cage overnight and not seen until the morning', but will receive round-the clock nursing according to its needs.

It is not only your pets that we treat at Wright & Morten - this is a serotine bat which was brought into the Macclesfield Hospital for a few days tlc before being released back into the wild:

Wright & Morten have also teamed up with an animal physiotherapist, Anne Sweeney MCSP SRP ACPAT, for more details on equine physiotherapy read our companion animal factsheet.  Anne can be contacted via our surgeries or directly on 07904406881 - click here for details of her surgeries.

Cats and dogs

Purchasing a new puppy or kitten is an exciting occasion, but it can also be a bit daunting if you have not owned one before.

We can advise you at all stages of pet ownership. This can include suitable sources, as well as on steps you can take to ensure that you buy only a fit and healthy animal.

Jazz Boon:

We recommend that you bring your new pet to us within 48 hours of purchase, so that any problems can be identified at this stage before you become too attached. At this time we can explain all about diet, worming, vaccination and the like.

Wright & Morten have produced a comprehensive set of Wright & Morten factsheets on puppies and companion animals for you to read or print out

Pet insurance

We strongly recommend that you insure your puppy, particularly during the first 12 months of life. This is the time that they get into all sorts of mischief and are most likely to injure themselves. We are happy to recommend the Pet Plan company and offer advice within the terms of the Financial Services Act, which now covers pet insurance. We can organise  4 weeks of insurance free of charge at the time of initial puppy and kitten vaccinations.

For more information on pet insurance take a look at our companion animal factsheets

Small furries

Considering downsizing?

The keeping of small pets has never been more popular. As we all get busier, so many people are finding that they simply do not have the time to look after a pet dog. One alternative is the more independent cat, but had you considered a rabbit, a guinea pig or a rodent?

Rabbits make excellent companions (consider how they live in the wild – ever seen a single bunny?) and are becoming ever more popular pets. They are not simple pets to keep, and are better suited to the adult owner than their traditional role as the children’s pet. They benefit from access to an outdoor run, but are happy to live indoors and can be easily trained to use a litter tray and not to chew cables.

For further information, contact the Houserabbit Association at http://www.houserabbit.co.uk/.

Guinea pigs are less delicate than rabbits and may make a suitable alternative for younger pet owners.

Fancy rats and mice come with all sorts of different coat types and are active, intelligent animals. They can make great pets for children and adults, and will learn to follow intricate mazes which you make for them. They are more likely top be active during the day when you want to play with them than nocturnal hamsters and gerbils, which can be grumpy if disturbed when they are sleeping during the day.

For more information on caring for your rabbit, read our Wright & Morten companion animal factsheets - this also includes links to other small animal websites
